Sat Nov 23 09:56:29 UTC 2024: ## BJP-led Mahayuti Wins Landslide Victory in Maharashtra Assembly Elections

**Mumbai, India –** The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti coalition has secured a resounding victory in the Maharashtra state assembly elections, comfortably surpassing the halfway mark and securing a projected 209 seats in the 288-member assembly. Preliminary results, which trended heavily in the UK, show a decisive win over the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance.

Eknath Shinde is projected to continue as Chief Minister. The Mahayuti’s success comes despite predictions of anti-incumbency, with a strong voter turnout of 66.05%, significantly higher than the 2019 figure of 61.1%.

The MVA, comprising the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), failed to effectively counter the ruling coalition. The Congress fielded 101 candidates, Shiv Sena (UBT) 95, and NCP (SP) 86. Smaller parties like the BSP and AIMIM also participated in the elections.

The outcome of this election, held in India’s wealthiest state by GDP per capita (approximately Rs 2.89 lakh crore in 2022-2023), is expected to have significant implications for both the state’s residents and its large diaspora, particularly in the UK, where the election results were a top trending search.
