Fri Nov 22 18:13:06 UTC 2024: ## Israeli Strikes Kill Five Lebanese Medics, Escalate Lebanon Conflict

**Beirut, Lebanon –** Israeli airstrikes and ground incursions into southern Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of at least five healthcare workers and the collapse of a multi-story building in Beirut, escalating the ongoing conflict. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health confirmed the deaths of the five medics, all employed by the Islamic Health Organization; three were killed in Qatrani and two in Deir Qanoun Ras al-Ain. The ministry condemned the killings as war crimes.

The Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes targeting what it described as Hezbollah facilities and interests in Beirut’s southern suburbs and Tyre, causing widespread damage and prompting evacuations in several areas. A missile strike on an 11-story building in Beirut resulted in its complete collapse. The Israeli army also confirmed ground troops entered the village of Deir Mimas for the first time, engaging in clashes with Hezbollah fighters. Hezbollah reported retaliatory attacks against Israeli soldiers.

The escalating conflict has also impacted UN peacekeeping forces. Two rockets struck a UNIFIL base in the village of Chamaa, injuring four Italian soldiers. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned the attack, calling for the safety of UNIFIL personnel.

The latest escalation comes after a US-led attempt to broker a ceasefire failed. The conflict, which began with cross-border fire in the wake of the Gaza war, has already claimed the lives of over 3,580 people in Lebanon since October 2023, with over 15,000 wounded. The death toll and the continued attacks raise serious concerns about the potential for further escalation and the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Lebanon.
