**London, England –** A Middlesex team, comprised of players from Barnet and Ealing, made history this week by competing in the inaugural Walking Cricket London Cup at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The team, which included six women, faced off against Surrey, Essex, and the MCC in a friendly tournament hosted by the MCC.
Despite not winning every match, Middlesex secured a victory against their Surrey rivals, marking their first Walking Cricket win. The event highlighted the success of Middlesex in the Community’s (MITC) Walking Cricket program, a partnership with GLL designed to promote physical activity and social engagement among older adults. Many Middlesex players were experiencing cricket for the first time since school, or even for the first time ever, showcasing the program’s impact.
“Today was a great day,” said MITC Community Coach and Walking Cricket Lead Coach Mikey Thompson. “We’ve seen remarkable progress in the program since starting taster sessions a year ago.” He praised the team’s performance and thanked the coaching staff and Angus Fraser for their support.
Player Helen Kacouris echoed the excitement, calling the experience at Lord’s “a privilege.” She highlighted the enjoyable and uplifting atmosphere of the tournament and expressed enthusiasm for future competitions, even hinting at the possibility of an overseas tour.
The Middlesex Walking Cricket program continues to grow, offering opportunities for older adults to participate in the sport and build community connections. Those interested in joining can find information on local hubs online.
