WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to lead the Department of Justice, replacing scandal-plagued former Congressman Matt Gaetz, who withdrew his name from consideration. Bondi’s nomination has been met with a significantly warmer reception on Capitol Hill and within the Republican Party than Gaetz’s would have been.

Bondi, the first female Florida Attorney General (2011-2019), has a long history with Trump, including serving on his first impeachment defense team and chairing the legal arm of the Trump-aligned America First Policy Institute. Her extensive experience as a prosecutor and defender of civil and criminal actions, coupled with her prominent appearances on Fox News, are seen as assets.

However, Bondi’s past is not without controversy. The New York Times highlighted a 2013 incident where, around the same time she solicited a $25,000 donation from the Trump Foundation for her reelection campaign, her office decided not to investigate Trump University. This donation was later deemed illegal.

Despite this scrutiny, Republican support for Bondi appears strong. Senator Lindsey Graham called her nomination a “grand slam” and predicted swift confirmation. Senator Josh Hawley expressed his belief that she is “up to the task” of overhauling the Department of Justice.

Meanwhile, the House Ethics Committee is expected to release a report on December 5 detailing further information regarding allegations of sexual misconduct against Matt Gaetz, even though he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Justice Department post. Sources indicate that the committee believes the report’s release is in the public interest due to the severity of the allegations.
