Sekar, a sixth-generation weaver from Anakaputhur, is leading a sustainable revolution in the textile industry by incorporating banana fiber into his fabric creations. His innovative approach, which transforms waste banana stems into strong and durable yarn, has garnered international attention and offers a promising solution for both environmental sustainability and economic empowerment.

Sekar’s journey began over two decades ago with a seemingly simple commission: weaving a sari using a blend of banana and cotton fibers. He established Ananafit, a company operating within the Anakaputhur Natural Fibre Cluster, to further this endeavor.

Extracting fiber from banana stems is labor-intensive, but Sekar’s all-women weaving team meticulously hand-extracts, washes, and spins the fiber into yarn, creating unique and sustainable fabrics. Each sari takes up to 15 days to produce, showcasing the artistry and dedication involved. Ananafit sources banana stems from local farmers and even repurposes those used in temple festivals, minimizing waste.

Despite challenges in securing technological support for fiber extraction, Sekar remains optimistic. He utilizes social media for marketing and has a loyal customer base spanning India, Singapore, and Malaysia. He even upcycles leftover fibers into jewelry, ensuring a zero-waste production process.

Sekar’s vision extends beyond his own success. He advocates for government support and collaboration with textile research associations to develop efficient fiber extraction technology and create a common facility center to boost production and job creation. He has also inspired his son to pursue textile engineering, ensuring the continuation of his sustainable legacy.
