**Saharanpur, [Date]:** A young woman, Sonika, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan late Tuesday night. Her family has filed a dowry death case against six members of her husband’s family, including her husband and father-in-law, who have been taken into custody.
Sonika, married a year ago to Ravi, whose father Balveer Singh is a commission agent, was found dead in her home in Khajuri Darwaza. While her husband’s younger brother’s wedding festivities were underway, Sonika went to an upstairs room and ended her life. Her family alleges dowry demands led to the suicide. They have accused Ravi, his brother Rohit, father Balveer, mother Babita, and sister Rakhi.
Police have recovered Sonika’s body, conducted a post-mortem, and registered a case based on her father Manoj’s statement. The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the CO Sadar Dehat. While Balveer Singh claims Sonika suffered from depression, the police are focusing on the dowry allegations. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the family and neighborhood, where wedding celebrations were abruptly replaced by mourning.
