KURNOOL, INDIA – Sathydev’s latest film, “Zebra,” directed by Eshwar Karthik and released on November 22nd, 2024, has received a mixed response from critics. The film, which also stars Dhanya, Sathyaraj, and Priya Bhavani Shankar, features Sathydev as Surya, a bank employee entangled in a ₹5 crore scam while trying to protect his girlfriend, Swathi (Priya Bhavani Shankar), from a ₹4 lakh fraud. The plot follows Surya’s desperate race against time to repay the money to Adi (Dali Dhananjaya), a powerful figure with a mysterious past.
While the film’s initial premise and first half garnered some positive feedback, critics point to a weak screenplay and pacing issues in the second half. The storyline, set in the present day, was criticized for logical inconsistencies, unlike the more forgiving period setting of a similar recent film. Although Sathydev’s performance was lauded, Dali Dhananjaya’s role reportedly overshadowed him. The background score by Ravi Basrur was praised, while the songs and editing received less favorable comments, with suggestions that the runtime could have been trimmed. The cinematography and production values, however, were deemed strong.
Overall, the movie is considered likely to appeal to a niche audience, leaving the broader audience potentially unsatisfied. The film’s publicity, boosted by Chiranjeevi’s involvement, did not fully translate into critical acclaim.
