**New York, NY** – A new Broadway musical, “Swept Away,” opened Tuesday at the Longacre Theater, presenting a gripping and spectacular adaptation of the infamous 1884 Mignonette shipwreck. While inspired by the Avett Brothers’ album of the same name and the true story of the yacht’s demise, the musical expands upon the source material. Instead of the original small pleasure craft, the production features a 300-ton whaler, sailing from New Bedford, Massachusetts, with a large crew of 15 men.
Director Michael Mayer’s staging emphasizes the overwhelming nature of the sea and the impending doom, foreshadowed in a ghostly prologue. The characters, identified by titles (Captain, Mate, Big Brother, Little Brother) rather than names, heighten the morality play aspects of the narrative. The story follows the crew’s struggle for survival after a shipwreck, ultimately leading to a horrific act of desperation in the face of starvation.
John Gallagher Jr. portrays the experienced Mate, while Adrian Blake Enscoe and Stark Sands play the contrasting roles of Little Brother and Big Brother respectively. Wayne Duvall takes on the role of the Captain, who foresees the impending disaster both for his ship and himself. The Avett Brothers’ music underscores the themes of faith, morality, and the inevitability of death, creating a powerful and haunting theatrical experience. The musical explores the ethical dilemmas faced by the characters, leaving audiences to grapple with the consequences of their choices in the face of extreme adversity.
