**Rio de Janeiro, Brazil –** President Biden’s avoidance of the press during and after the G20 summit in Brazil has fueled renewed calls for his resignation. Following a six-day trip to Peru and Brazil, where he rarely engaged with reporters, even ignoring pleas as he boarded Air Force One in Rio de Janeiro, prominent political analyst Nate Silver has publicly urged the President to step down.
Silver, citing a Washington Post report detailing Biden’s press avoidance, argued on X (formerly Twitter) that there’s no reason to assume the President is currently competent to lead, given the complexities of the job and high-stakes decisions facing the nation. He suggested Vice President Kamala Harris should serve the remaining two months of the term.
This isn’t Silver’s first call for Biden’s resignation. He previously voiced similar concerns in July, following a poorly-received interview, and suggested Biden should have withdrawn from the race a year ago. Silver’s comments come as Biden’s approval rating has plummeted to a new low of 37.4%, according to 538.
While acknowledging that a resignation would be a significant risk, Silver contends that continuing in office at such low approval might pose an even greater risk to the Democratic party. He reiterated his belief that Democrats would exert significant pressure for Biden to resign. The White House has not yet responded to Silver’s statements.
