Fri Nov 22 00:19:36 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra Assembly Elections See Record Turnout Amidst Minor Incidents

**MUMBAI** – Maharashtra recorded a record voter turnout of 65.08% in Wednesday’s state assembly elections, exceeding both the 2019 assembly elections (61.44%) and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections (61.33%). Over 65% of the 97.02 million eligible voters participated across 288 constituencies.

While polling was largely peaceful, minor incidents marred the day. Three polling stations in Beed district were vandalized, resulting in criminal cases being filed. Other skirmishes were reported in various locations, including verbal altercations between candidates and clashes between party supporters. Videos of alleged booth capturing and assault also circulated on social media. Authorities swiftly replaced damaged voting machines and arrested those responsible for the vandalism.

Gadchiroli, a Maoist-affected district, saw the highest turnout at 73.68%, while Mumbai and its suburbs recorded lower participation rates. Colaba constituency in South Mumbai had the lowest turnout at 44.49%.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) credited its efforts, including increased polling booths and improved voter amenities, for the increased turnout. They reported seizing ₹707 crore worth of cash, liquor, and drugs since October 15th, and received over 10,000 complaints of code of conduct violations.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising BJP, NCP, and Shiv Sena, is hoping to retain power, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance aims to improve its standing after a successful Lok Sabha election performance. Final turnout figures are expected to be released Thursday.
