Thu Nov 21 16:59:52 UTC 2024: ## India and Australia Strengthen Defence Ties with Air-to-Air Refueling Agreement

**New Delhi, November 21, 2024** – India and Australia have formalized an agreement allowing their air forces to conduct air-to-air refueling operations, significantly boosting India’s military reach in the Indo-Pacific region. The announcement was made Thursday by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Australian counterpart, Pat Conroy, during a bilateral meeting in Vientiane, Laos, on the sidelines of a regional security conclave.

The agreement enables the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) KC-30A multi-role tanker transport aircraft to refuel Indian military aircraft. An implementing arrangement was exchanged in New Delhi on November 19th, following Australia-India air staff talks. This enhances interoperability between the two air forces and marks a substantial step forward in their bilateral defense relationship.

Air Vice-Marshal Harvey Reynolds, Deputy Chief of Air Force, RAAF, lauded the agreement, highlighting its contribution to stronger defense ties and improved cooperation in various scenarios. He emphasized the importance of the arrangement in building trust and understanding between the two nations. The RAAF already conducts training with the Indian Navy’s P-8I Neptune surveillance aircraft.

Minister Singh noted the strong foundation of the India-Australia partnership, particularly within the Indian Ocean region, and expressed optimism about further collaborations between the two countries’ defense industries. The agreement reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and Australia, contributing to stability in the Indo-Pacific.
