**The Hague/Jerusalem** – The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Israeli counteroffensive in Gaza. The warrants allege responsibility for “the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts,” as well as intentionally directing attacks against civilians. The alleged crimes occurred between October 8, 2023, and May 20, 2024.
The warrants mean Netanyahu and Gallant could face arrest if they travel to any of the ICC’s 120 member states. Netanyahu’s office vehemently denounced the charges as “absurd and false lies” motivated by antisemitism, vowing to continue Israel’s military actions. Several Israeli ministers echoed this sentiment, accusing the ICC of bias against Israel.
The ICC also issued a warrant for Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, although Israel claims to have already assassinated him.
Reactions to the ICC’s decision have been sharply divided. While the EU’s top diplomat called for respect and implementation of the warrants, several European nations, including the Netherlands and Italy, are grappling with how to respond. The US, however, has voiced strong opposition, with some incoming Trump administration officials condemning the ICC and threatening retaliatory measures. Criticism also came from Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who accused the court of siding with Hamas. The ICC’s actions have further inflamed the already tense geopolitical situation surrounding the conflict in Gaza.
