**NEW YORK, NY** – After a remarkable five-decade career, New York City television icon Chuck Scarborough announced his retirement from WNBC-TV. Scarborough, 81, made the emotional announcement Thursday evening during the 6 p.m. newscast, his voice cracking as he shared the news with viewers. His final broadcast will be December 12th.
Scarborough, the longest-serving news anchor in New York City history, has been a fixture in homes for 50 years, 32 of which were spent alongside co-anchor Sue Simmons. Their partnership holds the record for the longest-running anchor team in the city’s television history.
His career at WNBC began in March 1974, and he’s covered some of the most significant events in the city’s history, including the 1977 blackout, the September 11th attacks, and the COVID-19 pandemic. His reporting has also taken him across the globe, from Europe and Russia to the Middle East and South America.
While officially retiring, Scarborough’s contract with WNBC extends into next year. In an internal memo, he described his departure as “retirement with an asterisk,” and praised his colleagues for their dedication to accurate and objective journalism in a challenging media landscape.
Earlier this year, WNBC and the city celebrated Scarborough’s 50th anniversary with a special lighting of the Empire State Building in blue and gold. The network and his many colleagues expressed their gratitude for his decades of service and unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence.
