**Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu –** Coimbatore, now a bustling city, boasts a rich history of urban development, tracing its roots back to its establishment as a municipality in 1866. This pivotal moment, coinciding with the opening of the Madras-Podanur rail link, significantly boosted the city’s growth and regional connectivity.

Initially covering just 10.88 sq km, the Coimbatore Municipality efficiently managed its resources, generating ₹1.31 crore in revenue and spending ₹1.30 crore on infrastructure and public services. Its responsibilities encompassed a wide range of civic functions, including road maintenance (83 miles), education (32 elementary schools, five high schools, and more), and healthcare (five maternity centers, an infectious diseases hospital, and nine dispensaries). The municipality also implemented 11 town planning schemes, guiding the city’s structured growth.

Historian Rajesh Govindharajulu highlights how street names in areas like R.S. Puram and Ram Nagar reflect the city’s administrative and patriotic history, honoring past municipal chairmen and freedom fighters, respectively.

Coimbatore’s journey culminated in its elevation to a Municipal Corporation in 1981, becoming the third in Tamil Nadu after Chennai and Madurai. Subsequent expansions in 2011 significantly increased its area to 257.04 sq km, encompassing 100 wards across five zones. Further expansion is currently under consideration, demonstrating Coimbatore’s ongoing growth and future planning. The city’s evolution showcases a consistent effort towards modern infrastructure and citizen welfare, transforming from a small municipality to a major urban center.
