**COIMBATORE, November 22, 2024** – A historical account reveals the vast reach of Coimbatore’s British-era police jurisdiction, encompassing the Nilgiris and Wayanad districts. Based on F.A. Nicholson’s 1887 “Manual of the Coimbatore District,” the force numbered 946 in 1884, with the Superintendent of Police headquartered in Coimbatore overseeing various taluks. The Assistant Superintendent, a European officer based in Erode, managed additional areas. The Deputy Inspector General’s office also operated in Coimbatore.
The article further details the history of Coimbatore’s Central Prison, starting construction in 1862 and completed in 1868. Prior to this, a district jail existed near the Town Hall. Local historian Rajesh Govindarajulu notes the shifting of major offices from around the Town Hall to the vicinity of the Coimbatore railway station during the colonial period.
A 1902 colonial building near the present-day collectorate served as the District Police Office for over a century. H.D. Robertson, the then DIG of Police, officially handed over the building in 1908. Following the formation of the Coimbatore City Police in 1972, the building became the dedicated office for the District Superintendent of Police before its demolition in 2014.
The Hamilton Club, built in 1918 by British officer F.A. Hamilton, initially served as a recreational facility for police officers. Later converted into a Police Museum in 2018, it reflects the enduring legacy of British influence. An annex, the Harvey Block, built in 1951, now functions as the Police Club.
Currently, Coimbatore City Police comprises 20 law and order stations, a cybercrime station, four All Women Police Stations, two Traffic Investigation Wings, and the Central Crime Branch. The Coimbatore District Police jurisdiction boasts 33 law and order stations, a cybercrime station, six All Women Police Stations, and the District Crime Branch, showcasing the substantial expansion of the police force since its colonial origins.
