**Srinagar, November 22, 2024** – Top Jammu and Kashmir leaders are demanding swift action against army personnel accused of torturing civilians in Kishtwar district. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, and Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq all condemned the alleged incident, which reportedly involved the rounding up and torture of at least five young men by the army.
The alleged incident occurred on Wednesday, November 20th, while the army was tracking militants in the area. Residents claim the soldiers summoned several villagers to an army camp, where they were severely beaten, sustaining injuries so severe they required assistance to reach the hospital.
Chief Minister Abdullah called for a transparent investigation and court martial for those found responsible. Ms. Mufti echoed these sentiments, linking the incident to similar allegations earlier this year and urging the government to prevent future human rights violations. Mirwaiz Farooq, in a Friday sermon, condemned the torture and expressed concern over the lack of accountability in such cases.
The Indian Army has acknowledged the allegations and launched an internal investigation, promising to take necessary follow-up action. However, the strong reaction from political and religious leaders highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding human rights issues in the region.
