BEREA, OH – Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski dismissed speculation about his job security on Tuesday, despite the team’s dismal 2-8 start, their worst since their 0-17 season in 2017. Recent local radio discussions have questioned Stefanski’s future following a significant regression from last year’s 11-win season.
Stefanski, who won NFL Coach of the Year last season, attributed the speculation to “life in the big city,” stating his sole focus is on securing a win this Thursday. He and General Manager Andrew Berry both received contract extensions in June, though the terms were not disclosed.
The Browns’ struggles are compounded by quarterback Deshaun Watson’s second season-ending injury in as many years, a significant setback for the team after trading three first-round picks and giving him a fully guaranteed $230 million contract. Watson’s performance has also been underwhelming since joining the team, having started only 19 games due to an 11-game suspension in 2022. Following Watson’s injury, Stefanski relinquished play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey.
While acknowledging the team’s poor performance, General Manager Berry expressed confidence in both himself and Stefanski, emphasizing their focus on improving the franchise’s long-term prospects. Berry called Stefanski “an outstanding coach” and “absolutely part of the solution.” A loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers this Thursday would mark the Browns’ 22nd losing season since returning to Cleveland in 1999.
