Thu Nov 21 17:59:31 UTC 2024: ## Delhi LG Provides Jobs to 1984 Anti-Sikh Riot Survivors, Promises More

**New Delhi, November 21, 2024** – Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena today distributed appointment letters to 47 survivors of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, marking a significant step towards addressing decades-old grievances. An additional six letters will be issued to successors of eligible beneficiaries who have exceeded the age limit.

The distribution ceremony, held in West Delhi’s Tilak Vihar area, saw LG Saxena announce that 437 more applications are currently under verification. He instructed the revenue department to expedite the process through special camps. Furthermore, he directed officials to rename the “Widows’ Colony,” primarily housing riot victims, based on residents’ suggestions.

The move, which comes ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, has been lauded by the BJP. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva stated that the job placements and the colony renaming reflect the strong bond between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Sikh community.

The appointments follow the LG’s decision last month to relax qualification requirements for riot survivors. A Raj Niwas statement explained that procedural delays had prevented these appointments for over four decades. LG Saxena, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressed hope that the jobs will help the affected families regain self-respect and heal some of their wounds. While acknowledging the irreplaceable loss suffered by the survivors, he emphasized the government’s commitment to providing compassion and support.
