Thu Nov 21 18:59:39 UTC 2024: ## Uttar Pradesh to Hike Stipend for 1.5 Lakh Shikshamitras

**Lucknow, November 20, 2024** – The Uttar Pradesh government is poised to increase the monthly stipend for approximately 1.5 lakh Shikshamitras (para-teachers) working in the state’s primary schools. The education department has submitted a proposal for a stipend hike to the finance department, following a directive from the Allahabad High Court.

The court had ordered the government to form a committee to ensure Shikshamitras receive a respectable salary, after a petition highlighted the inadequacy of their current ₹10,000 monthly stipend. The Shikshamitra Sangh filed the petition in 2023, arguing for equal pay for equal work. The court agreed, stating the current stipend was insufficient and mandated the formation of a high-level committee to address the issue.

A committee was formed in January 2024 and submitted its report in August, recommending a stipend increase based on the cost of living. The government is expected to make a decision soon based on this report. A government lawyer informed the court that the proposal is under consideration by the finance department.

This increase would provide significant relief to over 150,000 Shikshamitras, who have long advocated for better compensation. The move is anticipated to improve their economic situation and positively impact the education sector.
