Thu Nov 21 04:18:35 UTC 2024: **UP By-Election Marred by Allegations of Police Intimidation**
**Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh –** A video circulating on social media has sparked outrage in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly showing a police officer threatening voters in the Meerapur Assembly constituency by-election held on November 20, 2024. The footage appears to depict Kakrauli police station SHO Rajiv Sharma brandishing a pistol and threatening women who were going to vote.
Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav has called for the immediate suspension of the officer, demanding an investigation into the incident. He shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the Election Commission (EC) should take swift action against the officer for deterring voters from exercising their democratic right.
Numerous social media users echoed Yadav’s concerns, condemning the alleged intimidation as a blatant violation of electoral norms and a stain on the democratic process. One user, Qamrul Akhtar, described the incident as a “blot on democracy,” calling for accountability.
Yadav, addressing a press conference in Lucknow, warned officials against such actions, asserting that those found guilty would face job loss, pension forfeiture, and potential legal repercussions. He expressed confidence that the by-election results would favor his party, but emphasized that the courts would not tolerate such intimidation.
By-elections were held across nine Uttar Pradesh Assembly constituencies on Wednesday, including Meerapur. The EC has yet to officially comment on the allegations. The incident has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
