**Coimbatore, November 21, 2024** – Two men died Thursday morning in Coimbatore after being run over by a lorry at the Ramanathapuram junction on Tiruchi Road. P. Selvaraj, 59, and A. Victor, 60, were riding a two-wheeler when they were struck by a speeding lorry. They were trapped under the vehicle and died at the scene. The lorry driver is facing investigation by the Traffic Investigation Wing (East).
The accident has renewed calls for improved road conditions at the junction, where ongoing underground drainage (UGD) work by the Coimbatore Corporation has left the road riddled with potholes and scattered debris. Motorists report difficulty navigating the area, with vehicles frequently skidding due to the poor road surface.
Residents and motorists are criticizing the Corporation for the prolonged nature of the UGD project, which has reportedly been underway for nearly a year. K. Kathirmathiyon, a member of the District Road Safety Committee, highlighted the Corporation’s repeated failure to meet deadlines for completing the work, citing missed promises made to the District Collector in October and November. He called for accountability from officials. A senior police officer linked the poor road conditions to frequent traffic snarls and minor accidents in the area. The accident underscores the urgent need for the Corporation to expedite the road repairs and ensure the safety of motorists at this crucial junction.
