**Hyderabad, November 20, 2024** – Telangana is among 17 states and union territories designated as a “Core Cold Wave Zone” by the National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH), prompting a public advisory warning of impending cold wave conditions. The advisory, issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, highlights the period from November to March as the cold wave season, with December and January expected to see the most extreme temperatures.
Other states included in the high-risk zone are Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha.
The advisory specifically cautions vulnerable populations, including the homeless, elderly, economically disadvantaged, pregnant and lactating women, children, and outdoor workers, about the dangers of prolonged cold exposure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) defines cold wave conditions as minimum temperatures at or below 10°C in plains and 0°C in hilly regions.
Potential health risks associated with cold waves include hypothermia, frostbite, and immersion foot. The advisory urges residents to take necessary precautions to avoid serious health consequences and potential fatalities.
