**Seattle, WA – November 20, 2024** – Thousands of West Seattle residents awoke to a second day without power following Tuesday night’s powerful windstorm. While Seattle City Light (SCL) crews worked through the night, restoring power to tens of thousands, outages remain in several pockets of the area.
Significant outages affecting Admiral to Alki and Riverview to the city limits have largely been resolved, according to SCL. However, the utility’s outage map experienced glitches initially, and some areas, such as 51st and Orleans, are still not reflected. Residents are urged to report power restoration via text to 206-293-6302, as SCL doesn’t publicly track restorations.
The storm’s impact extends beyond power outages. Several schools remain closed, including Sanislo Elementary, Community School of West Seattle, and all Highline Public Schools. YMCA Early Learning centers in Westwood are also closed. Sound Transit’s Link light rail began service two hours late. While Metro buses and the Water Taxi operate on regular schedules, expect some trip cancellations and reduced service on Washington State Ferries.
Numerous traffic signals remain dark or flashing, creating all-way stop intersections. Drivers are urged to exercise caution. Reports of downed power lines and other storm-related issues should be reported to authorities and then to the West Seattle Blog hotline at 206-293-6302.
Despite the extensive outages, many residents expressed gratitude for the swift response from SCL crews. However, others criticized the city’s preparedness, highlighting the disparity in restoration times across neighborhoods and the continued inconvenience caused by the outages. The cause of the outages continues to be investigated, with some speculation centering around the city’s reliance on above-ground electrical lines.
As of late morning, power remained out in several areas, including sections of White Center, Shorewood, and along 51st and Charlestown. Residents are advised to monitor SCL’s outage map and check with local schools and businesses for updated information.
