**Mangaluru, November 21, 2024** – The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Surathkal inaugurated a new Olympic-sized swimming pool on Wednesday. The ₹7.39 crore facility, constructed since July 2023, boasts 10 lanes and an advanced ozone-based filtration system, making it an environmentally friendly addition to the campus.
The 50m x 25m pool will be used for various swimming competitions, training camps, and fitness programs. Its impact extends beyond the NITK community; Director B. Ravi described it as a “jewel in the crown” of the institute’s sports infrastructure, emphasizing its potential to benefit the surrounding areas by promoting health and community engagement.
The pool’s opening is particularly timely, as NITK will host the All India Inter NIT Sports Meet from January 10-12, 2025, featuring swimming, athletics, and powerlifting events. Speaking at the inauguration, Dronacharya awardee and chief coach of the Indian national athletics team, P. Radhakrishnan Nair, highlighted the importance of regular exercise for stress management and overall well-being, emphasizing its role in healthy aging.
