**Georgetown, Guyana –** Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a landmark visit to Guyana Wednesday, resulting in the signing of ten agreements aimed at bolstering cooperation across various sectors. The visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 56 years, marks a significant milestone in the two nations’ relationship.
The agreements cover a wide range of areas, including hydrocarbons, digital payment systems, pharmaceuticals, defense, agriculture, and digital transformation. A key aspect of the collaboration involves the potential deployment of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Guyana, signifying a leap forward in digital financial integration.
PM Modi highlighted Guyana’s crucial role in India’s energy security, stating that a long-term partnership blueprint in the hydrocarbon sector will be developed. India also pledged continued support for Guyana’s military capacity building through scholarships and training, exemplified by the recent delivery of two Dornier aircraft.
The partnership extends to agriculture, with India providing millet seeds last year contributing to Guyana’s food security. Future cooperation will focus on expanding the cultivation of rice, sugarcane, corn, and soybeans. India also committed to establishing a Jan Aushadhi Kendra (generic medicine store) in Guyana, further strengthening pharmaceutical ties.
President Mohamed Irfaan Ali lauded PM Modi’s leadership, calling him a “champion among leaders” and praising his impactful governance model, which he noted is being adopted by several nations, including Guyana. Both leaders emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving global and regional issues, with a shared commitment to climate justice and reform in global institutions. The visit underscores a renewed and significantly strengthened partnership between India and Guyana.
