Wed Nov 20 18:35:44 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Doctors Perform Groundbreaking Spinal Cord Stimulation for Chronic Pain

**Chennai, November 20, 2024** – Apollo Hospitals in Chennai has announced a medical breakthrough, successfully treating a 30-year-old Omani man suffering from debilitating chronic pain using a novel spinal cord stimulation technique. The patient experienced excruciating pain in his groin and thigh for two years, stemming from damage to the genitofemoral nerve during a previous testicular tumour removal surgery.

The nerve damage resulted in neuralgia, severely limiting the patient’s mobility. Doctors at the Apollo Cancer Centre identified the injury to the spinal dorsal root ganglion and implanted a spinal cord stimulator. This device emits electric impulses that block pain signals from reaching the brain, effectively managing the chronic pain.

According to Dr. Anand Murugesan, intervention pain specialist, this is the first time such a procedure has been performed in India. Dr. Appaji Krishnan, Senior Consultant (Spine Surgery), explained that the self-stimulating device has a 10-year battery life. Dr. Harshad Reddy, Director of Apollo Proton Care Centre, praised the team’s meticulous planning and highlighted Apollo Hospitals’ commitment to utilizing cutting-edge technology. The successful procedure offers new hope for patients suffering from similar chronic pain conditions.
