MUMBAI, INDIA (November 21, 2024) – Maharashtra saw a significant surge in voter turnout for the 2024 Assembly elections, reaching 65.11%, the highest since 1995. This surpasses the 61.39% recorded in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 61.4% in the 2019 Assembly elections. The increased participation, coupled with a larger voter base than the Lok Sabha elections, is expected to significantly impact the formation of the next government, with results due on November 23rd.
Regional variations were stark. Kolhapur district boasted the highest turnout at 76.25%, while Mumbai City recorded the lowest at a mere 52.07%. Even within Mumbai, disparities were evident, with Bhandup showing 61.1% turnout, contrasting sharply with Colaba’s 44.49%. Other districts also showed varied participation, with Vidarbha and Western Maharashtra experiencing increases, and Jalna in Marathwada registering a high 72.30%. Gadchiroli, a Naxal-affected district, surprisingly recorded 73.68% turnout.
The high turnout is attributed to several factors, including heightened political activity and possibly the impact of recent social and political movements. The final results will determine the implications of this increased engagement for the state’s political landscape.
