Thu Nov 21 04:43:10 UTC 2024: **Maharashtra Election Day Marked by Allegations, Incidents, and Conflicting Exit Polls**

MUMBAI, INDIA – Maharashtra witnessed a high-stakes assembly election on Wednesday, marked by a flurry of events ranging from allegations of voter fraud and violence to conflicting exit polls and high-profile voter participation.

Voting concluded with officials reporting a 58.22% turnout by 5 pm. However, the day was not without controversy. Congress candidate Nitin Raut from Nagpur North accused the ruling Mahayuti coalition of widespread rigging, including bogus voting and misuse of state resources. He dismissed exit polls predicting a Mahayuti victory, stating that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) would ultimately prevail. His claims were supported by Congress state chief Nana Patole, who claimed early trends showed strong support for the Congress. However, other exit polls varied considerably in their predictions. Peoples Pulse projected a large Mahayuti win (182 seats), while P-Marq predicted a closer contest. Matrize and Satta Bazar also predicted Mahayuti victories, although with varying seat numbers.

Several incidents marred the voting process. Congress workers in Nagpur attacked a car carrying an unused EVM, alleging it was being taken to a photocopy shop. In Wardha, NCP (SP) spokesperson Nitesh Karale reported being assaulted by BJP supporters. Further violence occurred in Parli, where a polling station was vandalized and an NCP (SP) worker was attacked. In Nandgaon, a clash erupted between a Shiv Sena candidate and an independent candidate. A technical glitch also temporarily halted voting at a Nashik polling booth.

Despite these incidents, prominent figures from Bollywood and business turned out to vote, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Mukesh Ambani, and several other celebrities. Sadly, an independent candidate from Beed passed away from a heart attack at a polling booth.

The day’s events highlighted the fiercely contested nature of the election and the uncertainty surrounding the outcome, despite the differing exit poll predictions. The final results will be awaited with keen interest.
