Wed Nov 20 20:16:12 UTC 2024: ## Rochester-Made Telescope “Eye” Sent to NASA for Space Mission
**Rochester, NY (November 20, 2024)** – L3Harris Technologies has delivered the crucial Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) to NASA for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Built by L3Harris’ Space and Airborne Systems segment in Rochester, the OTA serves as the telescope’s primary imaging system.
The 7.9-foot primary mirror within the OTA will collect light from distant celestial objects, including exoplanets, stars, galaxies, and supernovae. L3Harris rigorously tested the mirrors in extreme cold (-82 degrees Fahrenheit), ensuring precision optical alignment for the telescope’s operation one million miles from Earth.
“The measured optical performance exceeds any telescope we have ever produced in this size class,” said Ed Zoiss, president of L3Harris’ Space and Airborne Systems. The OTA is currently undergoing integration and testing at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. NASA plans to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope by May 2027.
