Wed Nov 20 19:08:20 UTC 2024: ## Modi’s Historic Guyana Visit Strengthens India-Caribbean Ties

**GEORGETOWN, Guyana** – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history Wednesday, becoming the first Indian leader in over 50 years to visit Guyana. His trip, coinciding with an India-Caricom summit, underscores growing ties between India and the Caribbean region.

Modi’s visit promises increased cooperation in key areas: health, energy, and agriculture. He highlighted Guyana’s burgeoning oil industry, stating that it will play a crucial role in India’s energy security following the discovery of significant offshore reserves in 2015. He also pledged support for improving agricultural production across the Caribbean, emphasizing food security for the island nations.

The strengthening relationship is evident in recent trade boosts, including Indian lines of credit for Guyanese military aircraft and funding for a vital river ferry. Modi also acknowledged the significant contribution of Guyana’s large East Indian population, descendants of indentured laborers brought to the country during British colonial rule. Nearly 40% of Guyana’s population is of East Indian descent. The summit with Caricom leaders further cemented this strengthened partnership.
