Georgetown, Guyana – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Guyana, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 56 years, has resulted in a significant boost to bilateral relations. Ten Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed Wednesday, covering key sectors including health, hydrocarbons, agriculture, and banking.
The agreements signal a deepening partnership across various fields. These include the potential implementation of a UPI-like real-time payment system in Guyana, enhanced cultural exchange, collaboration on medicine regulation and affordable medicine supply to Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations, and cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector encompassing crude sourcing, natural gas collaboration, and infrastructure development. Further MoUs focus on agricultural cooperation, digital transformation, and capacity building.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the visit as a crucial milestone in strengthening India-Guyana ties, emphasizing the potential for expanded trade and economic cooperation. He noted India’s ongoing contributions to Guyana’s skill development and capacity building. Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali echoed these sentiments, praising the fruitful discussions and the commitment to addressing regional and global challenges collaboratively. President Ali also highlighted future cooperation in infrastructure, education, defense, technology transfer, and food processing, mentioning the potential for ayurvedic medicine and vaccine manufacturing in Guyana.
The visit included a ceremonial welcome and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony under Modi’s “Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam” initiative. Modi’s two-day visit underscores a renewed commitment to a strong and multifaceted partnership between India and Guyana.
