**ROCKVILLE, MD** – A former Montgomery County teacher, Melissa Curtis, 32, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with all but 12 months suspended, for having sex with a 14-year-old student. Curtis pleaded guilty in June to three counts of third-degree sex offense. The abuse, which occurred between January and May 2015, involved multiple instances of sexual intercourse with the eighth-grade student, often after he volunteered for an after-school program Curtis oversaw.
According to police, Curtis provided the victim with alcohol and marijuana. The encounters took place in her vehicle and at various residences in Montgomery County. The investigation began in October 2023 after the victim came forward. Curtis turned herself in on November 7, 2023.
Upon release after serving 12 months, Curtis will be on supervised probation for five years and must register as a sex offender for 25 years. She is prohibited from unsupervised contact with minors, excluding her own children. Curtis had been a teacher for approximately two years, working at Lakelands Park Middle School, among other locations.
