**NEW YORK, NY** – A brush fire that ignited in Highbridge Park, bordering Washington Heights and Harlem, is under control, the FDNY announced Tuesday evening. The fire, reported around 2:20 p.m. near West 155th Street and Harlem River Drive, consumed approximately 10-15 acres of brush in a densely wooded and hilly area of the park.
The challenging terrain and limited water access hampered firefighting efforts, prompting a three-alarm response with 138 firefighters and medics. Firefighters had to drag hoses a considerable distance from Edgecombe Avenue to reach the blaze. No injuries or structural damage were reported.
The brush fire task force will remain on-site overnight to monitor hotspots and investigate the cause of the fire. Fire engineers will continue to patrol the area to prevent rekindling.
The incident highlights concerns surrounding the ongoing drought warning issued for New York City – the first in 22 years. City officials are urging residents to conserve water and prohibit barbecuing, grilling, and open flames in parks due to the dry conditions. Anyone witnessing unauthorized flames is urged to immediately contact 911.
