Wed Nov 20 18:11:45 UTC 2024: ## BJP Threatens Protest Over BPL Card Cancellations in Karnataka
**Bengaluru, November 20, 2024** – The BJP in Karnataka has threatened to lock down government offices if the Congress government does not immediately reinstate BPL cards allegedly cancelled from poor families. Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok, after visiting affected families in Bengaluru, accused the government of cancelling cards to raise ₹20,000 crore to appease disgruntled Congress MLAs lacking funds for constituency development. He warned against further cancellations.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar responded, stating that the government is following central guidelines for BPL eligibility. He acknowledged potential errors in the cancellation process and promised to reissue cards to eligible families whose cards were wrongly cancelled. A review is underway to remove ineligible recipients, and the Guarantees’ Implementation Committee will verify cancellations and rectify mistakes. The list of cancelled cards is being sent to MLAs for review.
