MADRID – Afghanistan, already grappling with political turmoil, is facing a worsening climate crisis that is pushing millions towards starvation and displacement, according to a group of experts and NGOs. While ranked seventh globally in vulnerability to climate change, the country is excluded from crucial international funding mechanisms and climate negotiations due to the Taliban’s rule.
Despite contributing minimally to global carbon emissions, Afghanistan is ravaged by recurring floods, droughts, and extreme temperatures, devastating agriculture and causing widespread food insecurity. Recent severe flooding and a three-year drought have destroyed crops, leaving 12.4 million people acutely food insecure and four million suffering from acute malnutrition.
The authors of a recent article highlight that withholding climate assistance is tantamount to punishing the Afghan population for the actions of their leaders. Afghanistan’s exclusion from the Green Climate Fund and UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) negotiations – though invited as a guest – directly impacts the most vulnerable, particularly women and children, who rely heavily on agriculture.
The experts urge the international community to adopt creative solutions to deliver aid without legitimizing the Taliban, suggesting partnerships with international and national NGOs. They emphasize that inaction will only exacerbate the situation, citing the already alarming number of children displaced by extreme weather and the looming threat of a poor wheat harvest. The authors conclude that ignoring Afghanistan’s plight is not an option and call for immediate, substantial climate assistance to avert a further humanitarian catastrophe.
