**New Delhi:** The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the official notification for the December 2024 UGC NET examination. This year’s exam will feature 85 subjects, an increase from the previous 83. Online registration is open until December 10th, with the Computer Based Test (CBT) scheduled for January 1st to 19th, 2025.
Significant changes have been implemented in this year’s NET exam. The examination now caters to three categories: eligibility for Assistant Professor, Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), and PhD admissions. While NET scores will contribute to PhD admissions, the final merit list will weigh NET scores at 70% and university interviews at 30%.
A notable addition is the inclusion of students completing the four-year undergraduate program under the National Education Policy (NEP). However, these students will only be eligible for JRF and PhD, not Assistant Professor positions, intensifying competition for JRF slots.
The short timeframe between the June and December sessions is a concern. With the June results released in October, students have a reduced preparation window, further compressed by the December exam’s shift to January. The notification’s late release, compared to previous years, exacerbates this issue.
