Banda Aceh, Aceh, Indonesia – November 19, 2024 – In the conservative Indonesian province of Aceh, known for its strong Islamic laws and traditional gender roles, a 28-year-old woman, Qurrata Ayuni, has opened a cafe challenging societal norms. Morning Mama, reportedly the only woman-run cafe in Banda Aceh, provides a safe and comfortable space for women in a city dominated by male-oriented coffee shops.
Ayuni, who lost her parents in the 2004 tsunami, established the cafe last year. She employs a predominantly female staff, offering a haven free from the smoke and noise often associated with traditional Aceh coffee houses. The cafe also sells children’s books and menstruation pads, further emphasizing its commitment to women’s needs.
While Aceh is renowned for its coffee culture, with a history linked to Dutch colonial rule, women traditionally haven’t held prominent roles in the industry. Human Rights Watch’s Andreas Harsono notes the difficulties Aceh women face in pursuing education and careers, citing both legal restrictions and social pressure.
Despite initial apprehension and societal expectations that women should remain at home, Ayuni’s initiative has been met with a positive response from many women. Customers praise the welcoming atmosphere and the comfort of interacting with female baristas. Even some men frequent the cafe, appreciating its unique ambiance.
The cafe’s success has inspired other women, with over 1,000 applying for barista positions. Ayuni hopes Morning Mama will serve as a platform for women’s empowerment, enabling them to pursue independent careers and challenge traditional expectations. While some older generations acknowledge changing times, others, like the owner of a competing coffee shop, still express reluctance to employ women. However, Ayuni’s venture is a testament to the resilience and ambition of women in Aceh, demonstrating their capacity to lead and innovate within a challenging social context.
