Wed Nov 20 13:14:51 UTC 2024: ## India, China Foreign Ministers Hold Talks on Border Disengagement in Rio
**Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:** Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. This marks the first meeting between the two foreign ministers since a significant border disengagement agreement between India and China.
The meeting focused on both global issues and the implementation of the recent agreement to de-escalate tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. Minister Jaishankar confirmed that progress is being made according to the terms of the LAC agreement.
The meeting follows a previous encounter between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia last month, where the foreign ministers’ meeting was reportedly discussed.
The October 21st agreement saw the restoration of the status quo ante along the LAC to pre-June 2020 levels. This involved the withdrawal of troops from several contentious patrolling points in Eastern Ladakh, resolving disputes that had persisted since violent clashes in the Galwan Valley in June 2020. While agreement had been reached on most patrolling points previously, the recent deal specifically addressed the remaining issues at Depsang and Demchok. Both countries’ troops have withdrawn and dismantled temporary infrastructure in these areas.
