**London, UK** – The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), owner of the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, announced today the launch of its new sustainability campaign, “Batting for a Better Future.” The initiative highlights the club’s significant progress in environmental sustainability throughout 2024 and outlines ambitious plans for the future.
MCC reported substantial achievements this year, including converting Lord’s floodlights to LEDs – a first for a major UK Test cricket venue – and increasing waste recycling from 17% to 51%. Water consumption was reduced by 15.5%, and all waste was diverted from landfill. Further initiatives included the installation of electric lawnmowers and the use of eco-friendly coconut fiber for practice wickets. The club also upgraded the Nursery Pavilion to electric heating/cooling and removed its diesel storage tank.
The MCC released an updated Carbon Impact Report, which sets a new baseline for emissions, including Scope 3 emissions from the supply chain. This report, developed with Net Zero Group, highlights the club’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
Looking ahead, MCC plans to expand its energy efficiency projects, including upgrading Building Management Systems and electrifying more grounds equipment. A new sustainability education program for Westminster schools and universities is also planned, along with a branded sustainability trail at Lord’s.
MCC Chair Mark Nicholas emphasized the importance of climate action in cricket, stating, “Greater ambition in the sustainability space is important to future-proof sport… We want to ensure cricket continues to thrive for generations to come.” Stuart Dunlop, MCC Sustainability Manager, added, “We’re committed to using our platform to inspire change… ‘Batting for a Better Future’ offers a fresh opportunity to lead by example.”
The “Batting for a Better Future” campaign will be featured across MCC’s website, social media, and events at Lord’s. The club invites fans to learn more about its sustainability efforts and join them in striving for a greener future for cricket. In addition to its sustainability efforts, the MCC also announced the launch of a new digital platform offering fans access to match tickets, exclusive content, and various other benefits.
