**Mumbai, November 19, 2024** – The Indian stock markets will be closed on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, due to the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the election dates on October 15, 2024, scheduling a single-phase election for all 288 seats, with 4,136 candidates contesting. Vote counting will take place on November 23, 2024.
The closure affects the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), suspending trading and settlement activities across stock, derivatives, and Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segments. This is the second market holiday in November. The next holiday will be Christmas on December 25, 2024, marking the last market holiday of the year in India.
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also be closed for its morning session (9 AM to 5 PM), while the evening session (5 PM to 11:55 PM) will remain open. Tuesday’s trading session saw a significant rebound after a seven-day decline. The BSE Sensex closed at 77,578.38 points, up 239.37 points, after reaching an intraday high of 78,451.65 points. Similarly, the Nifty closed at 23,518.50 points, up nearly 65 points, following an intraday high of 23,780.65 points. Both indices had experienced significant losses in the preceding week.
