Wed Nov 20 14:36:40 UTC 2024: ## Exit Polls Predict Close Contest in Maharashtra Assembly Elections; Violence and EVM Malfunction Reported
**Mumbai, India** – Maharashtra concluded its single-phase assembly elections on Wednesday, with exit polls painting a picture of a tight contest between the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). While some polls predicted a clear Mahayuti victory, others forecast a close race, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the final results.
Peoples Pulse projected a significant Mahayuti win (182 seats), while P-Marq predicted a tighter contest (BJP 137-157, MVA 126-146). Matrize also predicted a Mahayuti majority (150-170 seats), but with a smaller margin than Peoples Pulse. Gujarat Satta Bazar projected 138-141 seats for Mahayuti. Local betting markets also suggested a close fight.
The election day itself saw a mix of high-profile participation and reported incidents of violence. Celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and the Ambani family cast their votes, while actor Shakti Kapoor highlighted concerns about Mumbai’s infrastructure. However, reports emerged of violence, including an alleged assault on an NCP (SP) spokesperson by BJP supporters in Wardha district, and a clash between a Shiv Sena candidate and an independent candidate in Nandgaon. A polling booth in Parli was also vandalized. In Nashik, an EVM malfunctioned briefly, delaying voting for some.
Voter turnout reached 58.22% by 5 pm, with variations across constituencies. Mahim in Mumbai City had the highest turnout (55.23%), while Colaba had the lowest (41.64%). Initial turnout figures were lower, prompting appeals from political leaders and celebrities to encourage participation. Tragically, an independent candidate from Beed died of a heart attack at a polling booth.
While Congress leader Sachin Pilot expressed confidence in an MVA victory, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde predicted a landslide win for Mahayuti. The BJP also responded to allegations of cash distribution and illegal bitcoin funding of rival campaigns.
The final results will be eagerly awaited, with the varying exit poll predictions underscoring the closeness of the contest.
