MUMBAI, INDIA – Voting is underway for the 288 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, with a tight contest expected between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Early voter turnout indicates a significant participation, with various districts reporting varying percentages. For instance, Mumbai City reported 49.07% and Mumbai Suburban 51.76%. However, the overall estimated turnout at 1 pm stood at approximately 32%, with election officials expecting higher numbers as the day progresses.
The BJP is contesting the most seats (148) within the Mahayuti, followed by Congress (103), CM Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena (80), and Ajit Pawar’s NCP (53). The MVA coalition sees Congress contesting 103 seats, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (89), and Sharad Pawar’s NCP (87).
Several prominent figures have cast their votes, including Nita Ambani, Shah Rukh Khan and his family, and actor Shraddha Kapoor. However, the election day hasn’t been without incident. A case has been registered against Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Kedar Dighe for alleged possession of liquor and cash. Additionally, a clash occurred between candidates in Nandgaon, and allegations of a disabled CCTV camera at a polling booth were made by an NCP candidate.
Despite these occurrences, election officials express confidence in the smooth conduct of the polls. Congress leader Sachin Pilot expressed optimism about an MVA victory, while Congress state chief Nana Patole predicted a win for 75-80 of their candidates based on initial trends. The final results will determine the next government for Maharashtra. Further updates will follow as the day progresses and vote counting commences.
