Tue Nov 19 21:05:22 UTC 2024: ## International Men’s Day Highlights Male Wellbeing and Role Models

**Bracknell, UK** – International Men’s Day (November 19th) focuses on celebrating the positive contributions of men and raising awareness of their mental health. With suicide being the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK, this year’s theme, “positive male role models,” is particularly pertinent.

Local organizations are stepping up to support men’s wellbeing. Andy’s Man Club, a suicide prevention charity, offers free weekly peer support groups across the UK, including one in Bracknell every Monday at 7 pm. The group provides a judgment-free space for men to discuss their struggles.

Another initiative, Ascot Shed, offers a community setting where men can socialize, learn new skills (carpentry, model making, computing), and combat isolation. Initially aimed at retired men, the Shed now welcomes all men seeking connection and improved wellbeing.

While International Men’s Day has faced past criticisms regarding gender equality, the event now primarily focuses on acknowledging the challenges faced by men, such as the disproportionately high suicide rate. Support services like Berkshire Women’s Aid (BWA), while primarily known for supporting female victims of domestic abuse, offer help to all genders and can be contacted at 0808 801 0882 or helpdesk@bwaid.org.uk.
