**Kanpur, India (November 20, 2024)** – A seemingly ordinary pencil holds a world of scientific wonder, according to Assistant Professor Adhip Agarwala of IIT Kanpur. In a recent article, Agarwala delves into the fascinating physics behind this everyday writing tool, revealing the surprising properties of graphite, the core component of pencils.

Unlike pens that utilize flowing ink, pencils rely on the unique structure of graphite, a form of carbon. Agarwala explains that graphite’s layered structure, akin to slices of bread in a sandwich, allows for the easy detachment of graphene layers when writing.
