Tue Nov 19 16:43:23 UTC 2024: ## Madurai Court Sentences Woman to Life Imprisonment for 2014 Murder of Advocate

**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, November 19, 2024** – Sri Kalpana, the main accused in the 2014 murder of advocate D.P. Kamaraj, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Principal District and Sessions Court in Madurai. Two other accused, R. Anandhan and S. Karthick, were acquitted. The court also imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on Kalpana.

Kamaraj, the son-in-law of former Union Minister Dalit Ezhilmalai, was found unconscious in Kalpana’s Chennai apartment and later died. The case, originally heard in Tiruvallur, was transferred to Madurai by the Supreme Court.

The prosecution argued that Kalpana, involved in a land dispute with Kamaraj, had allegedly caused his death. While the court found Kalpana guilty beyond reasonable doubt based on the prosecution’s evidence, it ruled there was insufficient evidence to convict Anandhan and Karthick. The judge cited Kalpana’s failure to provide a plausible explanation for Kamaraj’s unconscious state as a key factor in her conviction.
