**COIMBATORE, November 20, 2024** – A significant fire broke out Wednesday morning at the Coimbatore Corporation’s plastic waste collection center in Kavundampalayam (Eru Company), engulfing a large quantity of stored plastic materials. The blaze, reported around 8 a.m., sent thick, noxious smoke billowing across the neighborhood, causing significant discomfort to local residents.
Four fire tenders, three from the Coimbatore North station and one from the South, were deployed to combat the fire. Coimbatore District Fire Officer P. Pulukandi oversaw the operation, which successfully brought the fire under control by midday. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran and senior officials visited the site following the incident. The affected godown, located adjacent to a micro-compost center, stored plastic waste collected through source segregation, awaiting sale to recycling dealers. An investigation is underway to determine the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire.
