Wed Nov 20 12:15:21 UTC 2024: ## Argentina to Play Football Match in Kerala

**Thiruvananthapuram:** In a move that has sent ripples of excitement through the Indian footballing community, the Argentina national football team is set to play a match in Kerala next year. This follows discussions between the Argentina Football Association (AFA) and Kerala’s Sports Minister, V. Abdurahman. The news fulfills a long-held dream for Kerala’s ardent football fans, many of whom hoped to see Lionel Messi play in their state.

While the Indian Football Association previously attempted to bring Argentina to India, financial constraints hampered those efforts. However, the Kerala government successfully negotiated the deal. Details regarding the number of matches, opposing teams, and specific dates are yet to be released.

The AFA’s visit aims to establish several football academies in collaboration with Indian partners, boosting the local sporting scene and creating employment opportunities. The Minister highlighted this as a key objective.

Argentina last played in India in 2011 (against Venezuela in Kolkata), generating approximately ₹16 crore in revenue. While costs have increased significantly since then, with the Kerala match estimated to cost ₹32-40 crore (or $4-5 million) in match fees alone, and over ₹100 crore overall, the Kerala government anticipates substantial returns surpassing these expenses.

Significantly, Kerala’s business community has already pledged sponsorship, with organizations like the Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association and the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekoopana Samithi expressing support. Reports suggest that gold merchants have already contributed approximately ₹100 crore.

The news has been met with immense enthusiasm. Celebrations are already underway in anticipation of Argentina’s arrival, marking a momentous occasion for Kerala football.
