**Winchester, Hampshire** – A highly respected veterinary surgeon, Dr. John Ellis (35), tragically took his own life using animal euthanasia drugs, a coroner’s inquest has revealed. Dr. Ellis, who worked at Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists, died on November 6, 2022. His death was ruled a suicide.
According to testimony from his mother, Tina Ellis, Dr. Ellis had become increasingly distressed by the number of pet owners choosing to euthanize their animals due to the cost of treatment, rather than seeking necessary care. He expressed profound sadness over these preventable deaths, citing instances where owners with expensive cars opted for euthanasia while others, struggling financially, would have done anything to save their pets.
The inquest heard that Dr. Ellis obtained a lethal dose of euthanasia medication intended for a large animal from his workplace under the guise of putting down a friend’s dog. He subsequently administered the drug to himself intravenously at a friend’s vacant home.
In addition to the emotional toll of his work, Dr. Ellis was grappling with relationship issues, including a secret affair and an impending breakup, as well as financial difficulties which at times left him sleeping in his car. These combined stressors, his mother testified, contributed significantly to his mental state.
Assistant coroner for Hampshire, Simon Burge, described Dr. Ellis’ death as “a huge waste of a talented life.” Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists released a statement expressing their deep sorrow at the loss of their “wonderful person and incredibly talented vet.” The tragedy has highlighted the emotional burdens faced by veterinary professionals, particularly in situations involving difficult end-of-life decisions for animals.
