**Bhubaneswar, Odisha:** Former Odisha minister and veteran BJP leader Samir Dey passed away on Monday at the age of 67. Dey, who had been suffering from a kidney ailment, succumbed to his illness while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack.

A three-time MLA representing Cuttack (1995, 2000, 2004), Dey served as Minister of Urban Development, Public Grievances & Pension Administration, and Higher Education from 2000 to 2009 during the BJD-BJP coalition government. Before entering politics, he was a practicing advocate.

His passing has drawn widespread condolences. Governor Raghubar Das lauded Dey’s work for the people, while Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that his last rites will be conducted with full state honours. Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, including from Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and BJD President Naveen Patnaik, all acknowledging Dey’s contributions to the state’s development and the welfare of its citizens.

The Cuttack district administration cancelled planned cultural events at the Bali Jatra festival to mourn Dey’s death. A procession will take his body to the Odisha Assembly and BJP office before the final rites are performed in Cuttack.
