**New Delhi, [Date]** – Delhi’s air quality plunged to a “severe plus” level on Monday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a season-high of 484, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The alarming pollution levels have triggered a surge in demand for air purifiers and masks across the National Capital Region (NCR).
Traders report a significant increase in sales of air purification systems. Vijendra Mohan of Air Expert India in Indirapuram saw sales double to 40 units per day, compared to the previous average of 20. Similarly, Rakesh Singh, a Blueair dealer in Pushp Vihar, reported a jump from 10-12 units daily to 25. Ravi Kaushik of Airth Air Purifier Company in Vikaspuri witnessed a remarkable 70% increase in sales since late October. This heightened demand reflects the growing recognition of air purifiers as essential household items amidst the worsening air quality.
The impact extends beyond air purifiers. A chemist in East Delhi noted a substantial increase in sales of paediatric nebulisers and inhalers in November, exceeding the previous ten months’ combined sales. This indicates a concerning rise in respiratory issues among children. Mask sales have also skyrocketed, with one Apollo Pharmacy salesperson reporting a jump from five to six masks daily to 40-45.
The Commission for Air Quality Management has implemented Stage-IV restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in response to the AQI exceeding 450. The deteriorating air quality underscores the urgent need for effective pollution control measures in Delhi and the NCR.
